The Sinai Covenant God made with His people in Exodus 19 was a pivotal event. It was the day God came down. "And by the third day let them be ready: for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai, before the eyes of all the people," (Exodus 19:11).
On that day God made Himself known to the people with a trumpet blast.
"And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice," (Exodus 19:16-19).
After this event, Moses received directions for the feast days that Israel was to keep. One, named Yom Teruah, involved a day of blowing the trumpet. For the Israelites the trumpet was a ram's horn. "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD," (Leviticus 23:24-25).
Jews remember this day for the Binding of Isaac and the creation of Adam. It is the first day of their new year, a time to celebrate, a time to be inspired. Today, Israel is still in mourning, still grieving and determined to maintain hope. But the trumpet blowing held other meanings for Israel. They blew trumpets when they needed to gather the tribes for times of war or to crown a king. It was the sound crying "Assemble!" It was an alarm and a means to announce the arrival of Yom Teruah.
In 2024, Yom Teruah or Rosh Hashanah, begins at sundown October 2. But Israel has already sounded an alarm, and they are already at war. Perhaps this Rosh Hashanah as the ram's horn is sounded hearts will be turned to Exodus 19 and God's invitation to draw near to Him in this new time of His grace. It is time to pray for Israel all the more, for their safety and strength, for their release and for their new birth in Jesus.
As God came down and made Himself known in the past, He will do it again for the nations. He has promised that at the conclusion of Ezekiel's war many will have to admit God's existence because His drawing near will be unmistakable. "Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD," (Ezekiel 38:23). Ezekiel's war will be a massive invasion of Israel scholars believe will be led by the alliance of three main countries: Turkey, Russia and Iran. We see this alliance growing today. But the invasion will end in victory for Israel.
The Fall Feasts are thought to be the endtime feasts that will be fulfilled when the Messiah returns. Many think Yom Teruah is the shout of the Lord at the rapture. One day we will know, but for now we believers draw near. We are to possess victory in Jesus and rejoice. God has won our battles; it is up to us to stand for ourselves and those around us. Stand because as it is said of our day, "We live in biblical times and... victory is on the way for Israel."
