What Christians Can Learn From a Fisherman

Fishing poles line the shore, flashing in the setting sun. Tattooed dads, some young, some not, with sweating cans of pop at their side, hunker down by sons and daughters, casting and recasting, and patiently, some not, untangling the lines of their newbie offspring.

One mom, sporting a turquoise baby sling on her shoulders and a wine red ponytail wields her pole like a pro. But in vain it seems.

Fish are jumping beyond their casts, sending rings floating under the breasts of a family of Canada geese gliding placidly by.

    Hope dies hard.

To fishermen and the ever optimistic. Some might think these are wasting their time. But perseverance pays as fishermen know.

Peter knew a thing or two about fishing and he learned more about perseverance by hanging out with Jesus. One time Peter and his associates had been out all night on the lake fishing. They caught nothing. With nets.

In the morning, they were docked lakeside, cleaning their nets when Jesus climbs in to Peter’s boat and says, “Put out into the deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” (Luke 5:4 NIV)

We can imagine what Peter was thinking.

Oh man, this guy’s a carpenter. He knows nothing about fishing. But—

Here’s what he said, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

He was glad he did. He caught so many fish the nets were breaking and both boats started to sink. For Peter that was the equivalent of winning the lotto.

It’s easy to give up. But—

What if it’s that one last try that brings the victory?

    Perseverance pays...eventually.

I’m not sure what you are hoping for, waiting for, praying for. Whatever it is don’t quit. Submit to God and ask Him to give you wisdom and words to pray. Then just keep speaking those words.

Got a testimony about perseverance? We'd love to hear it.
